Black is one of those colours that refuses to be just a colour, it’s a psychological landscape.

The reflection of black through the mindset: what are people’s understandings of the colour black in their lives?

Is it a representation of a feeling?

It’s physical presentation to the mind opens up what ideas?

To go through the visuals of black is to curate versions of a colour, ADDING MEANING to the understanding of your world.

From wearing black to feeling black, the channels created to understand a colour beyond its physical properties further help us understand the mind’s ability to feel what we see and look at how we feel.

Culturally, black shifts depending on context: In fashion, it’s timeless, versatile, and often used to express individuality or seriousness. spirituality, it symbolizes the void, the womb of creation, or the space where transformation begins. In psychology, black is the “shadow”, Carl Jung spoke of the hidden aspects of the self we must confront to grow.

Visually, black is paradoxical. It’s both a presence and an absence. Wearing black can make someone feel shielded, confident, or invisible depending on their mindset. Feeling “black” can mean heaviness, but also clarity, stripping away distraction to face raw truth.

To me, black often represents depth, the embodiment of acknowledgement. I mean, when you see the colour black in a room full of bright colours, you’ll acknowledge it, gathering at a funeral in the standard black attire using its symbolism of mourning. A black sheep in a crowd of white sheep. I want to tear apart visions of ourselves that show the cycle of rage to luxury through black. Associated with elegance, authority, and sophistication, think of the “little black dress” or the black suit.

On a personal note: Black has been a symbol of power and trying times, depending on which level of life I’m on. To create from black has been from self-introspection, the little things about me or life that feel black. Black holds its secrets, its telling that you can associate it with “seeing nothing” when sitting in a black room. Too often, black is pinned to depression a stereotype that reduces its depth to heaviness alone. Yes, black can carry the weight of mourning, silence, or solitude. But to stop there is to take away from the power that black holds.

Black is not weakness. It is strength. It is the colour that absorbs everything and still stands whole. It is the shade that boosts confidence when you need to give yourself more appreciation, the cloak that allows you to walk into the world with authority even when you feel fragile inside.

Black is the shadow that teaches us light.
